Project Description
DeMaria has added boilers in 15 separate buildings on the Detroit campus. DeMaria had to customize its logistical approach for each location in order to safely renovate and minimize disruption to building users.
Communication was key! In order to minimize disruptions, the project team submitted an impact form at least two weeks in advance to the Owner whenever a shut down or any disruption was necessary. This process proved to be very beneficial because it encouraged communication among the owner, users, and DeMaria.
Two buildings feature vertical expansions requiring the addition of new boiler rooms on the roofs of both Shapero Hall and the Engineering Building. With both buildings greater than four floors, DeMaria used cranes to maneuver large pieces of mechanical equipment and building materials securely into place. Life safety took a top priority since both buildings are located within a densely populated, urban area flanked by pedestrian foot traffic.
