Carl
A. Gerstacker Building, IST High Bay Addition, The University of
Michigan
The Gerstacker Building addresses evolving medical and industrial research efforts in nanotechnology, material science, engineering, optics, lasers, biomaterials, and tissue engineering. The laboratory is utilized by both researchers and students.
DeMaria took great care during construction to minimize disturbances to the building immediately adjacent to the addition. This meant control of noise and vibrations that could have jeopardized on-going research activities with highly sensitive lasers.
Structural issues were also important. DeMaria made sure
the existing building's foundations were not weakened when digging
the 25 foot deep basement for the Gerstacker addition. |
