Blind and Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Centers, United States Department of Veteran Affairs
DeMaria recently finished the new Blind and Spinal Cord
Injury Rehabilitation Centers at the Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital
outside Chicago. Joint venturing with Chicago-based Walsh Group
and design/build partners, SmithGroup, a superb team was formed
that lead the project to successful completion and additional work
for the VA in other regions.
Demand for the new centers grew from overcrowded facilities. The Blind Rehabilitation Center now features home-like settings where individuals can be trained to live on their own. The Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Center features equipment such as bed lifts that assist nurses moving patients. It also raised the bed count to 68, allowing more patients to be accommodated. |
