Air
Traffic Control Tower, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Romulus,
Michigan
When originally built, the 230-foot Air Traffic Control
Tower at Wayne County Metropolitan Detroit Airport was the tallest
control tower in the mid-west. It also features an adjacent two-story
Tracon Building with equipment for long range radar.
At 147 feet, the structure of the Tower changes from
load-bearing precast concrete panels to structural steel with a
precast concrete panel exterior. The "mushroom" design
of the Tower required precast panels to be raised by crane then
bolted to the steel frame. Over 510 tons of steel went into the
entire complex.
DeMaria's self perform skilled trades performed earth
work and the placement and finishing of concrete.
